Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan is a highly accomplished scholar and leading expert in chemistry, nanotechnology, and material science. As the Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Global Engagement and the concurrent Director of the Office of Global Engagement and Partnerships (OGEP) at Mindanao State University at Naawan, he spearheads groundbreaking research initiatives and forges impactful international collaborations. He is the visionary founder of the influential Research on Environment and Nanotechnology Laboratories (REY Labs) and the Center for Microplastic Research and Innovation, both of which are instrumental in advancing the university's research excellence and global prominence.

Dr. Capangpangan earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) and a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of the Philippines-Diliman. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry, specializing in Molecular Science and Technology, from National Tsing Hua University-Academia Sinica, Taiwan, under the prestigious Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP). Further strengthening his leadership skills, he is currently pursuing a Doctor of Management (DM) degree. His academic distinction includes being recognized as a JSPS HOPE Fellow and a Future Science Leaders (FSL) Alumnus.

Dr. Capangpangan’s remarkable contributions to science and technology have earned him numerous accolades, including the 2024 PFCS Outstanding Achievement Award in Chemical Research by the Philippine Federation of Chemistry Societies and the DOST-PCIEERD Excellence in Project Implementation and Completion (EPIC) Award. Additional honors include the 2023 Outstanding Faculty Researcher Award, the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Research and Resource Generation, and the National Award for Best Paper from the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development – National Health Research System (PCHRD-NHRS). He has also held the position of Research Fellow at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel.

 

Dedicated to fostering innovation and mentoring the next generation of researchers, Dr. Capangpangan actively engages in interdisciplinary and impactful research initiatives. Through his leadership, he continues to elevate Mindanao State University at Naawan as a vital institution in advancing national and global progress.
